Feast your eyes!
Dude, I cannot properly explain how excited I am. I'll be honest, too. What has me excited isn't the trailer above, but what Richard Lambert explained afterward, in the reveal discussion. PCGamer has a nice write-up here.
Here's the basics:
- it arrives 6/6, a week before E3!!!
- it takes place on the island of Vvardenfell, which was the main landmass in the game, Morrowind
- ESO, and this expansion, are 700 years before the game, Morrowind
- this expansion sets up a lot of the events of the game, Morrowind
- most of the notable landmarks from the game, Morrowind, are present in the expansion, Morrowind, though in an earlier state; Vivec City, for example, is still under construction, so some of the cantos aren't there yet
Here is a link to the full presentation, or check it out below. I promise, if you're a fan of the series, it's a great watch.
Watch live video from Bethesda on www.twitch.tv
Are you excited for this? Do you play ESO? If not, does this make you more interested?

Final Fantasy, Elder Scrolls, Pillars of Eternity, and Streaming
There was a flurry of Final Fantasy announcements early this morning. You can get the full breakdown here.
Here's what caught my eye the most:
01. FFXIV: Stormblood is still on-target for 6/20. I had no doubt, but they're bringing back my favorite Final Fantasy class ever, the Red Mage, in this expansion. I played the first Final Fantasy back on the NES when it first came out, and I loved the Red Mage in that game. I've been hot and cold on Final Fantasy XIV, but the folks that love it FUCKING LOVE IT, so I keep trying it.
02. Final Fantasy XII HD is hitting PlayStation 4 on 7/11. I adore this game, but I'm not sure I'll ever replay it, especially if it's only on a console. I have a PS4, use it occasionally, but console gaming in my house is very difficult, whereas I can play my PC games anywhere, any time, with any mods, and they look gorgeous. I hope this hits Steam.
03. That Final Fantasy VII remake. By the maker, that's a clusterfuck. Today's announcement was just a reminder that this project exists. I already think Nomura is all flash and no substance, and the gutting of the battle system in this thing just reinforces that to me. Materia + turn-based + strategy made for some amazing battles, whereas this dumbed-down action system completely turns me off. I just don't understand this need to make everything flashy and stupid. Strategy is fun. Thinking is fun. And it's episodic because Nomura can't get projects out the door anymore. At least there's a chance he'll be kicked off this project, too (as happened on FFXV), when it takes too long. I hate this. Final Fantasy VI and VII were amazing games, and don't need to be 'fixed.' Make something new and great. Don't take something old and great and make it new and bad. Give me a true Final Fantasy VII sequel. Make it turn-based, strategic, and deep. Bah.
In happier news, Elder Scrolls Online is getting a major announcement today, at 1300 central time. As I said yesterday, I'm expecting it's going to be Vvardenfell (the island in Morrowind.) I'm a big fan of this game and series, so I'm excited to check it out. You can watch it here or below:
Watch live video from Bethesda on www.twitch.tv
I'm also thrilled with how well the Fig campaign is going for Pillars II. I'm loving the stretch goals, especially the one at $2m, which allows for more advanced user-controlled AI programming. I love that kinda shit, like in the original Dragon Age.
Anyway, I'll be streaming today @ 1630, and it'll probably be some ESO, so we can talk about the recent announcement. Check me out here or below!

Morrowind + Me
I think I finally clicked with the Elder Scrolls this weekend. I also played a shitload of Mass Effect 3, which you can get caught up on via my Road to Andromeda series below.
For someone that's never finished an Elder Scrolls game, I have an absurd number of hours sunk into Morrowind, according to Steam. Maybe 80 or so.
I think I've written about it here before, but on paper, the Elder Scrolls and I look a match made in heaven. Deep stats, deep lore, freedom of choice, loads of exploration, and on and on.
Yet, we've never quite clicked. I'll start a game in Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim, and I just never quite feel comfortable. I got really deep into Morrowind once, but even then, it was never something in which I felt terribly at-home or like I was really loving it.
I felt that way about (Bethesda) Fallout for a long time. Up until maybe early 2015, at which point, I burned through Fallout 3 + all DLC, Fallout: New Vegas + all DLC (holy shit, I loved that game), and then Fallout 4, once it hit.
In the case of Fallout, I believe I had to dial back my need to have constant and rapid progression through the story. Both Bethesda Fallout and Elder Scrolls are very loose in their story structure, and I was really off-put by that for a long time, despite really enjoying the Wasteland setting in the Fallout games.
I wonder if part of my issue with Elder Scrolls is that I'm just not a big fantasy guy, at least high fantasy, but I dunno. I'm nuts about Dragon Age and The Witcher, both of which are more low fantasy. Hmm.
Part of it, I know, is my need to play things in order (though I did talk myself out of Arena + Daggerfall), and the journal system in Morrowind is utter shit. It's an active inhibition to my enjoyment of the game.
So, yesterday, I finally caved and decided to finally push forward on a new character that I'd been writing in my head for a while, AND I decided I'd use Microsoft OneNote on my iPhone to act as a journal and note-taker for my high-level objectives. This changed everything for me.
I know about the Nerevarine and all that in the game, so I decided my guy would be a Dunmer, raised in the Empire, who was coming to his true home, Vvardenfell, for the first time, with which he would fall madly in love. He'd throw himself head-first into being a Dunmer, joining the Temple, the Morag Tong, and despite not being a magic user, House Telvanni, which he regards as the most truly Dunmer of the great houses. He'd turn on his Imperial masters at just the right moment.
He'd also use the filthy Khajiit to make himself rich, making money hand over first off of their moon sugar and skooma addictions.
I got through Seyda Neen recently, and started rounding out all the quest-gathering in and around Balmora. It sucks that there's no way to join the Camonna Tong, but oh well ... I wasn't going to join the Thieves Guild or Fighers Guild, but changed my mind. It's a good chance to earn XP and some of the quests are fun.
My goal is to ascend to become ruler of Morrowind and to drive the Imperial dogs out of my lands. We'll do that via leveraging groups like the Temple, the Great Houses (though Hlaalu might be a problem), the Ashlanders, the Morag Tong, and the Dunmer themselves.
I'm using OneNote to jot down anything I uncover that will help me in that process, and I'm finding that's been a relief in terms of keeping myself organized.
Also, of note - I'm using all the official add-ons from Bethesda, as well as the Morrowind Overhaul mod, which is amazeballs.
Last thing about this. Part of what's helped is that I am NOT streaming any part of this. I'm keeping it all for myself, and taking it at my pace, which has been really nice. I'll go 20-25 minutes without really moving the plot forward, just by talking to folks and taking notes on my phone. It's pretty fucking great, honestly.
And a side note - I've enjoyed ESO for a long time, though that's a fairly different beast from the main Elder Scrolls games.
And, as a side side note, I'm pretty sure Bethesda and ZOS are announcing a Morrowind expansion for ESO tomorrow at 1300 central time. Can't wait!
So, any chance any of you have a game or series with which you should've clicked, but haven't yet? Or maybe you had to make an adjustment to your normal approach, and then it clicked? Is there a game or series that you really wish you liked? Tell me about it!
Also, if you wanna watch me stream, I'll be on tomorrow at 1630 central. Not sure what game yet. Maybe ME3. Lemme know if you have any requests. Maybe ESO?

It's PAX South time! Watch the weekend action unfold here!
You can get caught up right here:
AAAND, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire has hit its goal, which is AWESOME! I am so excited for that game! I'm fighting off the urge to reinstall the original and replay it right now, since I want to save it a for a later-in-the-year stream.
Anyway, I'm off to lunch! See ya tonight!
-Blaine
I'm also streaming more Mass Effect 3 tonight, as part of my Road to Andromeda series. Probably around 2000 central time.

Whoah! Cool stuff hit the internet today!
First, the incredibly vague Squenix - Avengers thing.
I'm intrigued by what this could be, if it ever comes out, since Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics are working on it, but there's absolutely no details now, so let's move on.
Second, this hit around 11AM today, and paired with all the gameplay and details we've seen already for Mass Effect Andromeda, I'm super-hyped about this.
This game looks great, and it's gonna be a cluster-fuck when MEA, Torment, and Horizon: Zero Dawn are all fighting for my free time.
Third, and this was the pinnacle of my day, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire hit Fig today, and I am over the fucking moon. I threw down money on it, and I cannot wait to see more as the year goes on. Check out the Fig pitch video below.
I adored Pillars of Eternity, and cannot wait to do a full streamed playthrough of it for my second playthrough. If you've not played it, if you love games driven by story and character, give it a try. It's among the best I've ever played.
Also, I'm finally adopting a regular streaming schedule. I'll get more into it in another post, but today, I'll be streaming on my twitch channel from 1630-1800 and 2000-2130 (central). My first stream will be a bit of a chat and variety stream. I'm thinking about showing ya'll some Torment: Tides of Numenera, because it's fucking awesome.
See ya'll in a couple hours.

Some Cool Things On My Radar
I just wanna pass along a few cool things this morning.
First, Squenix announced some partnership with Marvel about which there are no details, and thus I am not hyped at all, but some people I respect are, so there's that. It has to do with the Avengers.
Second, there's an awesome Kickstarter going that I've backed. Apocalypse Now. A first-person survival horror RPG. No shit. It's Francis Ford Coppola + a bunch of devs from CDPR, Obsidian, and other awesome studios. Seriously, give it a look. It's worth your time.
Third, BioWare is dropping another Mass Effect trailer today. I'll post it later. Keep an eye on their Twitter or the Mass Effect YouTube channel.
Last, the thing about which I am the most hyped, is the pending reveal of Pillars of Eternity 2 at noon (central) today. It'll be on their main site.
Anyway, I'll post some stuff later today once details and awesomeness solidifies.
Word.

Quick Resident Evil 7 Impressions
I did a quick one-hour stream of Resident Evil 7 today on my Twitch channel, and I came away with some pretty strong feelings about it.
First, I've been an on-and-off fan of the series dating back to the original on PlayStation, so I'm not really new to Resident Evil. This entry is pretty different from the others, but the series has undergone multiple transformations over the years.
Second, my enthusiasm for the Resident Evil franchise has been flagging for a long time, and more or less bottomed out after RE5.
I'm also a big fan of horror, and I see video games as the last bastion of what can really scare me. I think maybe video games have ruined horror for me in all other mediums, because it's so much more raw in games, and I just can't find a good scare in film, TV, or books anymore. Silent Hill, Fatal Frame, and the first Resident Evil really freaked me out (that fucking dog coming through the window). Oh, and Alien: Isolation.
I wasn't all that hyped for RE7 initially. People don't scare me. They just don't. Any time the baddie in a horror flick is just some dude with a knife or a chainsaw or an axe or whatever stupid shit, it does nothing for me. Make it an alien, monster, undead thing, or something else to which I can't relate or know how to kill, and yeah, I'm freaked. I was very concerned that the game, based on early demos and video, was merely a 'southern Illinois simulator.'
That is not the case, though! It has non-real world elements, and I've seen pictures of monsters in reviews! Once I saw that, plus some very positive reviews, I gladly threw down for the digital deluxe edition on Steam.
So, it's pretty solid. The first 30min were excellent. The default controls with mouse and keyboard actually work pretty well, which is a nice change from most Japanese PC games. The game does a great job setting the mood right away, even with a plot cribbed straight from Silent Hill 2, by providing some not-bad voice-over narration, great use of sound, solid visuals, and well-timed scripted sequences. Usage of light (and deprivation thereof) is a little over-the-top, but maybe that's intentional.
Basically, you start out outside a house, then work your way inside. That sequence is very well done and provides a non-intrusive and mercifully quick tutorial.
Once inside the house, the flow of events is pretty cool. They do a great job with 'theme park haunted house.' There's a lot of great player-driven inspection to be done, some really shocking visuals, some great usages of sound, and in all, it's cool as hell. There's a bit with a VHS tape that is an absolutely brilliant sequence. For me, though, it starts to fall apart a little once you start to encounter enemies.
I'm torn here. Gore doesn't bother me, but I don't like tropes that are used just for shock value. If something shocking serves the story, then I think it's great. There are some gore sequences in this game that serve the story in an obvious way. There's also a fair amount that's just there to be like 'wow, look at us, we're shocking, like Eli Roth's tired shit, wow, look, it's blood and severed limbs, and oh shit, let's keep doing it over and over so that you're now rolling your eyes.' Yawn.
After about an hour, I was tired of the game, and was glad to quit. I almost wish there was no combat and no actual interaction between the player and the ... others. It actually could've been a really cool investigation game, but it slipped into tired tropes too easily and quickly. I'll keep playing, though. There's a lot of good still going for this game, even if some elements of it really rub me the wrong way.
If you wanna check out my hour with the game, here it is.
Watch live video from on www.twitch.tv
Anyway, I'm playing that, I'm also trying to finally push through Setsuna, and I've got my Mass Effect trilogy playthrough that I've had going for a few months, that's leading up to the Andromeda release in March. You can check out the full trilogy playthrough here and below:
I usually have one or two solid pushes (shut up) every weekend, in regards to Mass Effect. We're currently in the very early part of ME3. I stream the game on Twitch, and then upload it to YouTube later.
Also, PAX South is coming up this weekend, for which I'm hyped. Watch it all here, starting Friday at lunch.
Tomorrow (2017/1/26), though, Obsidian is finally announcing Pillars of Eternity 2 at noon (central). I am mega-hyped for that. Pillars is one of my all-time favorites, and I may do another Let's Play series for that this year.
Anyway, I'll try to be on here more. I just need to find a way to introduce myself to the concept of brevity.
I also need to figure out how to be a regular streamer/bloggiest and a busy dude.

Word.
